Alternative Fintech advertising opportunities

Whether you’re a start-up or an established Fintech company, there is no doubt that at some point you will need to explore online advertising to promote your brand. An obvious choice for Fintech advertising may be Google Ads, but what other options are out there?

At Curious Cat Digital, we work with a range of Fintechs and use a variety of different online advertising platforms. Here we look at a few of our favourites.

1. LinkedIn

LinkedIn is an extremely popular choice for Fintech advertising, and for good reason. The targeting parameters on LinkedIn are second to none, allowing you to target by:

  • Demographic (age, gender etc.)

  • Location

  • Job title

  • Seniority/experience level

  • Company name

  • And more!

That means that if you’re a Fintech with well-defined target audience personas, LinkedIn advertising could be a smart choice for you. This level of targeting helps ensure that your messaging (and your brand) is getting in front of the right people.

LinkedIn advertising is particularly useful if you have resources such as whitepapers or guides that provide genuine value to your target audience. In this case, you can take advantage of ‘in app lead generation’ ads. These ads typically see higher numbers of leads being achieved than traditional ads that divert users to your website.

Although we’re huge fans of LinkedIn, it is important to note that LinkedIn advertising is notoriously expensive when compared to other social media platforms. However, if you have a good-sized budget and a well-defined audience, then LinkedIn is definitely worth using.

Get in touch if you need a little help getting those personas nailed down. As a specialist Fintech marketing agency, our experienced team can help you build bespoke target audiences.

2. Reddit

If getting in front of ‘techies’ is important to your Fintech, then Reddit is the place to be, with a large proportion of Reddit users keen to be informed, to learn and to expand their knowledge base.

Additionally, Reddit users are extremely engaged with the content they are consuming. In fact, the average Redditor spends 34 minutes on the site per day. That’s one minute less than Facebook, six minutes more than Instagram, and 23 minutes more than LinkedIn on average.

If you’re creating audience-relevant ads on Reddit, you can expect a good return on your investment.

Interestingly, of all the social media platforms, Reddit is arguably viewed as the most ‘trustworthy’ by its users. As a result, Fintech advertisers using Reddit have reported higher click through rates on their ads when compared to other platforms.

An important consideration when using Reddit for Fintech advertising is the targeting. You can take advantage of classic targeting parameters such as location, device and time of day, but also ‘communities’.

Reddit’s communities are called ‘subreddits’, and here you can find almost any category of content that you can imagine. This is a major advantage of the platform, as it enables you to show ads to users who are actively reading about topics that relate to your business.

However, while Reddit’s targeting can be fantastic, it is worth noting that nearly 60% of Reddit users are under 35 years old, and nearly 50% of users are based in the US.

3. Stack Overflow

In case you haven’t heard of it, Stack Overflow is a question and answer-based online forum that is extremely well-regarded by those working in technology industries.

Although Stack Overflow may have a lower overall number of active users than Reddit or LinkedIn, it receives more than 100 million monthly visits from developers on average. In fact, 55% of developers report using Stack Overflow daily, and 80% at least once a week. This website really is the go-to for developers.

If your Fintech advertising goals include getting in front of developers as opposed to other job roles, then Stack Overflow is an obvious choice. Further targeting parameters are also impressive and could be viewed as a combination of LinkedIn and Reddit. You can target by:

  • Demographics

  • Location

  • Industry

  • Company name

  • Topic tags (the Stack Overflow equivalent of Reddit’s communities)

Stack Overflow also offers some unique advertising types when compared to other platforms. You have the option to feature in their email newsletter, sponsor blogs, and even produce 15 second ads for their podcast alongside more traditional digital ads.

The only obvious downside of using Stack Overflow to advertise your Fintech is the fact that if your target audience are not developers, they will be unlikely to use this website.
